The recent loss of two food banks in Rockingham County left a void that LOT 2540 wants to fill by having the needed food and supplies available to help people who are hungry, financially struggling and in need of assistance. With that goal in mind, LOT 2540 has formed a new partnership with Second Harvest and is planning its first annual Turkey Trot 5K.

In August 2015, LOT 2540 partnered with Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC, part of Feed America. “We’re very pleased to welcome LOT 2540 as a partner in the fight against hunger in western Rockingham County,” said Tracy Doss, Regional Outreach Manager for Second Harvest. “Here in Mayodan and across Second Harvest’s 18-county service area, hunger remains a significant issue, with more than 1 in 6 adults and 1 in every 4 children at risk of going without sufficient nutrition to live a healthy, active life. We honor LOT 2540’s commitment to be a source of food and hope for neighbors in times of need.”

This partnership enables LOT 2540 to collect donations of fresh produce, meat and other pantry supplies from area grocery stores and restaurants. LOT 2540 now receives on a daily basis 80-100 lbs of fresh produce and many bakery items that it can pass on to people who are financially struggling and in need of fresh food.

Before this partnership, LOT 2540 was able to hold one food pantry at the end of each month. Martin Roberts, Executive Director at LOT reported, “Now, in addition to our food pantry, we are providing in-house walk-in markets on the 1st, 2nd & 3rd Saturdays of the month and we are taking mobile markets to needy communities every Thursday.” To participate in the walk-in markets, clients can come to LOT 2540 on Saturday afternoons from 1-2 pm. After qualifying for aid, clients are given a grocery bag they can fill with fresh produce and meat, bakery items and canned goods.

As a part of their continued efforts, LOT 2540 is planning their first annual Turkey Trot 5K Walk/Run and BBQ Fundraiser for November 14, 2015. The 5K will begin at 8:30 AM at Elliott Duncan Park in Mayodan, NC. The BBQ Fundraiser including live music, a bake sale and family fun will be held following the 5K at LOT 2540. Participants receive a BBQ meal voucher. All others will be $6.00 per plate. The goal of the event is to raise money to feed the hungry in the community. LOT 2540 is a local faith based human services non-profit that offers not just a helping hand but a much needed help-up to folks who are struggling and in need. With the help of LOT 2540, clients move from crisis to self-reliance.
